October Book Pile

Hello November!

But before I completely say farewell to October, please join me in looking back at the awesome reading month that was. I met a number of new favorite authors: Truman Capote, Oyinkan Braithwaite and Daisy Johnson. I was reminded of how much I love Yōko Ogawa’s works. I read a couple of her books maybe 5-6 years ago and I’m so happy to encounter her again. I finished 4 of my NetGalley ARCs plus an author-requested book review. Lastly, I was able to read 3 Filipino titles–so good job, self 👍🏻 Here’s a rundown of the 13 books I read for October:

1) Wild Beauty by Anna-Marie McLemore ~ 3⭐️
2) In Cold Blood by Truman Capote ~ 5⭐️
3) Mooncakes by Suzanne Walker ~ 3⭐️
4) What About Today by Dawn Lanuza ~ 3.5⭐️
5) My Sister, the Serial Killer by Oyinkan Braithwaite ~ 4⭐️
6) Pretty Guilty Women by Gina LaManna ~ 3⭐️
7) Hindi Bagay by Jerry B. Gracio ~ 4⭐️
8) Here To Stay by Mark Edwards ~ 3⭐️
9) Hotel Iris by Yōko Ogawa ~ 4⭐️
10) LGBTQ+ KOMMUNITY 2019 edited by Paolo Herras and Richard Mercado ~ 3.5⭐️
11) The Octopus Curse by Salma Farook ~ 4⭐️
12) Everything Under by Daisy Johnson ~ 5⭐️
13) 100 Days of Sunlight by Abbie Emmons ~ 2⭐️

October Book Haul

I didn’t realize my husband and I acquired this many for October. But it was Komiket season again, and our local bookstores are doing early Christmas sales left and right 😅

From this haul, I’ve already finished 4 titles as I have mentioned in my wrap-up above. I’m currently reading and enjoying The Westing Game by Ellen Raskin. I’m very excited to read Not That Bad by Roxane Gay and The Crow Girl by Erik Axl Sund. The haul also includes titles from some of my favorite authors: Holly Bourne, Laini Taylor and Inio Asano.

  1. The return of the comment box! Mystery solved lol Yoko Okawa is not an author I know so I shall look out for something by her. Recommendation? My October was good. Enjoyed Circe. Coddling of the American Mind is fantastic but the highlight was ‘Story of the human body’ —what a book.

    1. Story of the Human Body sounds like something I would enjoy! Yoko Ogawa has that Haruki Murakami feel but without the magical surrealism. I recently read her Hotel Iris, I describe it as Lolita but with BDSM. Beautifully written. Her newest novel is The Memory Police, it has a George Orwell 1984 vibe to it.

  2. Awesome haul! 🙂
I’m so tempted to visit the bookstores having sales but my TBR book towers of doom always make me have second thoughts, haha.

I read “Shake, Rattle & Roll” for October. Kaka-miss yung SRR movies, wish they still made them!

I still need to “inventory” my Komiket haul, lol.

    1. True I miss old school horror. Iba pa rin. Haha. Sobrang self control talaga kelangan pag may sale. I think so far yung mga nabibili ko naman yung talagang sure na babasahin ko rin 😅

    1. It’s worth the read, definitely. I can’t say for sure but maybe the fact that I read an ARC also affected my reading experience. A lot of pages were not yet colored in, so it was a very rough version. Possibly the final published copy is 10x better 👍🏻
